This week in Old Man Basketball was all about the shake-up at the top of the standings! With both New Era Landscaping and Huron Gastro vaulting into a tie for first place, the pressure is on to see who can maintain dominance in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, DREAM Mobile finally slipped from the top after a strong stretch, putting their six-game winning streak firmly in the rearview mirror; you have to wonder if this is a one-off or a sign that the walls are closing in. Come Play Detroit is riding high, too, with a five-game winning streak, and they could be a serious threat if they keep this momentum. On the other hand, teams like Goldstein Dental and Muscle Milk are reeling — their respective losing streaks have fans wondering if they can right the ship in time. Buckle up, folks, this season is going to be a wild ride!
Huron Gastro 68, Athletico 55
It’s time for everyone to take notice because Huron Gastro is on fire, and their latest triumph – a 68-55 victory over Athletico – solidifies their spot as a team you can’t ignore any longer. This game swung on a 14-2 run that opened the second half, showcasing the scorching touch of Albert Robinson, who netted 24 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. He wasn’t alone, as Joey Turner added a solid 16 points, including two three-pointers, and Alex Spiess orchestrated the offense with a standout 7 assists. On the other side, Athletico found some spark from Brandon Daniels, dropping 18 points, and Eric Christian stepped up big, achieving personal bests with 9 points and 8 rebounds, well above his averages. While they fought valiantly, Athletico couldn’t keep pace as Huron Gastro extended their winning streak to four games, further cementing their status as a force to reckon with in this season. This victory not only elevates Huron Gastro's record to 8-2, showcasing their consistent prowess, but leaves Athletico sitting at 4-6, still looking for answers.
Goldstein Dental 68, Nosan Signature Homes 83
A bold 83-68 victory by Nosan Signature Homes over Goldstein Dental this week marks not just a single game triumph but a major turning point for a team that had been struggling. This result snapped a frustrating five-game losing streak for Nosan Signature Homes and showcased their true potential, led by the exceptional performance of Jake Billmeyer. With a stunning triple-double of 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, Billmeyer was a force on both ends of the court, supported by Ian McDonald, who contributed an impressive 29 points, including a remarkable nine three-pointers and a personal best for assists. The chemistry within the Nosan squad was undeniable, with Joe Cook-Shugart stepping up, not only scoring 16 points but also grabbing nine boards and dishing out four assists—well above his standards.
On the other side, despite the loss, Goldstein Dental showed their resilience. David led the charge with 17 points and a near triple-double of his own with nine assists, proving he remains one of the league’s go-to players. Chase Goldbaum also shone brightly, netting a personal best of 15 points. Nevertheless, the night belonged to Nosan as they capitalized on their shooting and teamwork, making it clear they’re a team to watch moving forward. The electric atmosphere in the gym reflected the thrill of competition, and this result has certainly shaken up the dynamics for the rest of the season.
Social Media Store 45, Ball Don't Lie 47
This matchup was a nail-biter to the end, and unfortunately for Social Media Store, it ended with heartbreak as they lost a tightly contested battle to Ball Don't Lie. Social Media Store showed fight and tenacity, highlighted by Rick Silva leading the charge with a personal best of 14 points, while Robert Collins showcased his all-around game with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Steve West also stepped up, dishing out a career-high six assists, keeping the offense fluid. However, it wasn’t enough to secure the victory. On the other side, Ball Don't Lie finally snapped out of their three-game slump, thanks in large part to Tyrone Jack, who poured in a personal best 17 points. Jason White recorded a double-double on the night, grabbing 14 rebounds to support his 10 points, while Corry Knight made himself known with three steals and a pivotal 12 points. This game proved to be a showcase of standout performances on both teams, but ultimately it was Ball Don't Lie who clinched a much-needed win.
Wallside Windows 64, Play For A Cause 60
The thrilling matchup between Wallside Windows and Play For A Cause showcased two contrasting styles that made for an electrifying evening. Adam Sabree of Wallside Windows was a force to be reckoned with, putting up an impressive 23 points and securing a double-double with 13 rebounds, showcasing his ability to dominate inside. Meanwhile, Devaughn Hill carried the scoring load for Play For A Cause, lighting up the court with an astounding 27 points, including six three-pointers, and illustrating his fantastic range. The key moment came when Wallside Windows pulled ahead in the closing minutes, driven by crucial plays from their supporting cast, such as Zack Slabotsky, who contributed a personal-best 10 points and provided vital assistance on both ends. DC Clark also stepped up for Play For A Cause, achieving a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, displaying his versatility and determination despite their current struggles. The result not only underlines Wallside Windows' balanced attack but also highlights the uphill journey Play For A Cause faces, having now lost three straight games.
Mosley Investments 58, Benzinga 68
It’s no secret that the supporting cast can make or break a team, and Benzinga proved just that in their victory over Mosley Investments. Shaun Jerdel shone brighter than a supernova, racking up a triple-double with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists that showcased his all-around dominance. But the magic didn't stop there—Kyle Otis erupted for a personal-best 18 points, including a scorching six three-pointers. Meanwhile, Guillermo Machain stepped up impressively, scoring 13 points and grabbing four rebounds, both personal bests, adding depth to his team's performance that went well beyond expectations. On the other side, James Griffin led Mosley Investments with 19 points, supported ably by Dejuan Moss's lung-busting 14 rebounds. Bryant Mosley's 4 assists and Reggie Crenshaw's 2 steals—both personal bests—couldn’t quite bridge the gap. With this win, Benzinga seems poised to shed its struggling season vibe, while Mosley Investments may need to reassess their strategy after falling to a 5-5 record.
Flirtin' With Disaster 49, Come Play Detroit 51
Mike Hand of Come Play Detroit stole the show with a sensational performance that was worthy of the highlight reel. Dropping 25 points, including an impressive four three-pointers, he showcased his shooting prowess and lifted his team to a nail-biting 51-49 victory over Flirtin' With Disaster. Hand's contributions didn't stop there; he also snagged eight rebounds and assisted on five plays, proving his all-around skills. Yet, he wasn't the only standout. Justin Jacobs helped facilitate the offense with an astonishing six assists, a mark significantly higher than his average.
For Flirtin' With Disaster, Jeffrey Weeks delivered a dominant double-double, scoring 16 points and securing a staggering 22 rebounds, both personal bests for him. His efforts, aided by Brad Steigerwald's 12 points and two three-pointers, kept his team in contention despite their four-game losing streak. Unfortunately for Flirtin' With Disaster, they continue to struggle and remain under .500, while Come Play Detroit rides high on a five-game winning streak.
DREAM Mobile 46, New Era Landscaping 54
This matchup was a vital one, breaking DREAM Mobile's six-game winning streak while propelling New Era Landscaping to three straight victories. Both teams now sit with identical records of 8-2, but with this win, New Era Landscaping has claimed the edge in their ongoing battle. Jared Carithers led the charge for New Era, putting up 19 points, while Darius Freeman excelled with a double-double of 10 rebounds and 3 assists. On the flip side, Ryan Zinser had a standout game for DREAM Mobile, scoring a personal best 24 points and collecting 11 rebounds for a double-double. His offensive prowess was complemented by Jake Mickley, who added 6 points, while several players stepped up with notable performances: Paul Czuchna and Derrick Kennedy showcased impressive rebounding efforts, both surpassing their season averages. This matchup was a showcase of talent, and it set the stage for an exciting continuation of the season.
Detroit Build 78, Muscle Milk 58
These two teams have a history steeped in competitive spirit, with the Detroit Build and Muscle Milk mixing it up frequently in past matchups. This time around, the narrative of Detroit's ascendance and Muscle Milk's recent struggles unfolded predictably, resulting in a convincing 20-point victory for the Build. Nick Dallas led the charge for Detroit, scoring 22 points while demonstrating impressive playmaking with three assists—both personal bests. He wasn’t alone, though; Jovaughn Wilson showcased his versatility with a double-double of 20 points and 15 rebounds, plus a fantastic six assists, reflecting what has been a stellar recent surge for the Build, now riding a three-game winning streak. On the flip side, Dushawn Harsten shone for Muscle Milk with a game-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough to halt their five-game losing skid. Both teams had standout performances littered throughout, including Patrick McNally and Robert Gaddy contributing well beyond their season averages, adding to the drama of the match. With the Build looking increasingly formidable, it’s clear the pressure is mounting on Muscle Milk to find their footing.
