Seeking their first victory of the season, the Nets entered their final game of June as 6.5-point underdogs against the Spurs. Clearly, Vegas was predicting Ryan Spencer’s franchise would have to wait until July to snatch that first tally in the win column. However, aging sophomore Joe Platas had alternative ideas. He was locked in, and had established a mindset going into the matchup that he would come out firing, leading to the 40-year-old sharp shooter attempting two shots from beyond the three-point arch on the first possession alone. Although the first one would be off target, the second attempt would conclude in success, marking the beginning of a magical night for Platas, who would go on to hit a total of 7 three-pointers.

“I felt like I was 25,” Platas remarked in the postgame interview. It makes sense that the number 25 was on his mind, because that’s exactly the amount of points he scored, exceeding his previous career high by a whopping 19 points. On a team with last season’s MVP Scott Witkowski, it was Joe Platas’s performance that shined the brightest on this BGBL Monday night, leading the Nets to a double-digit victory over the Spurs. Witkowski did not have too shabby of a performance himself, recording 20 points, 13 rebounds, & 3 assists on the evening.

The young Brooklyn franchise moves to 1-1 with the victory, and many that doubted Ryan Spencer’s draft at the beginning of the season might be eating their words. Many thought Spencer reached on Brian Becker in the 2nd round, but he appears to be working the offense well and facilitating some solid ball movement. The Nets became the first team this season to have three different players with at least three assists in the same game, Becker being one of those three players. Brooklyn looks forward to its next matchup tonight against the Philadelphia 76ers, who find themselves in a must-win situation relatively early in the season.
