Week 3 Writeup:
After three weeks Tim’s is still undefeated and leading the league and everyone else is still scratching their heads. Tim continues to have missed games from high end players like Steve Ellis and this week Tom Labrie (Labrie is rumored to be sitting out a few games in protest since Tim never puts him in the writeup). He is flying to London next week to look for opportunities there in the euro league. Tim is indifferent since he has his firewall of Ketchum, Ganem, Ferrari & golfer John Daley.
Dailey Double 67 Lennon Lightning 44
Coach Karl who was the runaway leader in votes coming into week three for commissioner of the year, general manger of the year and the coach of the year. He arrived at the gym early with what appeared to be some extra hair product in use. Karl was either expecting a loss due to two key players being away or he intentionally lost the game to deflect some of the heat he was getting for being the leading vote getter in all three categories.
After his squad scored 97 points in week two, Karl’s Lightning struggled to make a hoop from the opening tipoff. Daley’s team pushed the pace of the game with the squad of Matt McCaffery, Todd Santora, Phil Barrett and Paul Stevenson by running the break after Lightning missed shots. The ball seemed to end up in the hands of the open man each and every time down for easy baskets. The new and improved Matt McCaffery was feeling good about things. He made 7 out 8 of the shots he put up in the first half and was heard chirping at his coach about some missed open shots while sitting on the bench. For the majority of the game Daley’s team was in the lead. Every member of Daley’s team got their name in the scorer’s book was the first time this season. Rookie Carey Cusick (16) was held to half of his normal output.
Savages win their second straight
The Savages won their second straight game beating Kals Kingpings 71 to 55. The Savages took a defense first approach early on holding the Kingpings to 10 points and for a 13-10 lead at the end of the first. The offenses got going in the second quarter when Guan and Marco each hit a pair of 3 pointers. John Kalantzakos had 10 points for the Kingpings in the 2nd quarter to keep them close, but Tyronne Scott was too much to handle inside adding 7 points for the Savages and building a 33 - 26 first half lead.
The Savages stretched the lead to 14 in the 3rd quarter using a balanced attack as 6 different players scored. Bob, Johnson and Qian each had big buckets to help build the lead and Marco nailed a deep 3 as the shot clock expired. Tyronne closed the door on the Kingpings in the 4th quarter tallying 9 more points for a total of 20 on the night. If they were tracking rebounds Tyronne would have had a nice 20 - 20 night. Marco had 18 points all from behind the arc, many that would have been good from NBA range. Jason Conway added 14 points and Qian finished with 10. The Kingpins John K led the way with 16, while Rob Ashe had 11 and Dave Snyder had 10 in the loss.
Shockers 68 Bulldogz 48
Sadlers Shockers got into the win column Monday night with a 68-48 victory over Buatti's Bulldogz. The Shockers displayed a balanced scoring attack led by the one two scoring punch of Grant Sidney (19) and Bob Horgan (14). Rounding out the scoring for the Shockers was Gus Bybee (13), John Garofoli (8) and Chris Sadler (14). The Bulldogz were a bit undermanned and battled all night but the running style offense of the Shockers was too much in the end. Coach Buatti led the Bulldogz scoring with 13 and double D, Dennis Delevante used the skills he learned at the Rucker on the famed 155th street NYC courts to pour in 10. Marty Markarian added 8 with strong play in the post. Those of you hoping to see Tyson/Fury 3 or otherwise known as Buatti/Sidney 2 will have to wait. Due to contract disputes and the fact that the two teams do not meet for the rest of the regular season, it would have to be a playoff matchup for us to witness again. All ended well with handshakes and laughs like a good Rugby match should!
Mongrels 48 Magic Mullins 40
The mongrels remained undefeated and stand as the lone unbeaten team. Coach Tim must have the magic since his teams always win and he has a championship under his belt. After leaving the senior tour John Daley has found a new sport and has been a big contributor to the winning streak. Geoff Ketchum has avoided the sophomore jinx and has been playing some great basketball. Ganem & Ferrari must have played some good defense but only combined for 8 points. Magic Mullins was back at full strength but dropped to 0-3. This team has talent and will have to play a little together to gel. Dave Rose (12) & Paul B (10) were the only players in double figures. Coach Keith had 6 which may be a career high.
