The WLC’s board of governors on Thursday approved a plan for the league to return to action in Virginia Beach, Virginia, next month.
The vote passed 29-1, with the Oh you thought - OYT the lone dissenting voice, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The team’s star point guard, Greg Bell , said last week that he wouldn’t participate in games if Portland didn’t have a chance to make the playoffs. The team currently sits in ninth place in the WLC Conference.
“The Board’s approval of the restart format is a necessary step toward resuming the WLC season,” WLC commissioner Derek Holser said in a statement announcing the league’s return. “While the COVID-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we are hopeful of finishing the season in a safe and responsible manner based on strict protocols now being finalized with public health officials and medical experts.”
Holser addressed the current protests in the U.S. in his statement as well. “We also recognize that as we prepare to resume play, our society is reeling from recent tragedies of racial violence and injustice, and we will continue to work closely with our teams and players to use our collective resources and influence to address these issues in very real and concrete ways,” said Holser.
The WLC was the first major U.S. sports league to suspend its season for the coronavirus, after Free Agent Guard Francis McConnel tested positive on March 11,2020. Other sports leagues started postponing games the following day.
AND NOW THE LEAGUE IS FINALLY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The table's set for a tantalizing 2021 WLC Season, which means we'd better get familiar with the menu before it starts April 6th.
Not so much in the sense of laying out title favorites and MVP candidates du jour but more in terms of narratives. What will we chew on for the next few months? Which relentlessly overblown and undercooked stories will give us gastrointestinal distress, leading to feverish hallucinations and nights spent hunched in pitiable, powerless agony over the porcelain...
The metaphor has broken down.
At any rate, we all know injuries tend to dictate a good portion of every season. The healthy thrive, while the banged-up fail to meet their potential. We'll leave those angles alone.
Instead, we'll hit on the key conversations and questions that'll spark discussion and define what should be a phenomenal upcoming campaign—albeit one whose outcome might already be determined.
The storyline that defined the 2019 offseason, rampant talent consolidation, was procedural in nature.
Who is the leagues best?
How do the mechanics of a Aaron Webb opt-in and trade need to work? What is the true reason Greg Bell declined the trade? Why did GM Posley put Aaron Webb on the Block?
It was "How can we?" rather than "Are we sure we should?"
Well, later is now. Teams that took on huge names will spend the season tinkering and managing egos as they try to make these new fits work. Some will, and some won't. And that will not only determine this season's league hierarchy but also potentially shape rosters for several years to come. As an example, just imagine what might happen if Justin Sivells, Deontae Posley and Ben Pachekailo reach the WLC Finals this season. The three have never done it together, last time we have seen an incredibale roster like this was in 2017. I mean I'm still trying to figure out why Francis Mitchell, Justin Sivells Damien Butler and Ben Pachekailo did not take home the trophy that season, we will never know the truth behind that team. I mean what a phenomenal team, I have been hearing rumors that there is a 30 for 30 on ESPN regarding this team. Either way Team undefeated may run into a few teams that are just as hungry as they are at winning the Title this season. So the question is can they get it done?
Can Bell and Thomas coexist in Oh you thought - OYT? Many hope not, according to Zach Lowe of ESPN.com: "They are tapping their fingers together, Mr. Burns-style, in anticipation of the first time Bell undresses Thomas for some comatose defensive blunder, grabs the ball, walks it up, and runs the slow-poke set he wants." Will Bell and Thomas let kalvin spread his wings and run the offense through him? We all know Corey is ball dominant, but from the looks of it corey is chasng another Asist title this season.
Will Butler and Jackson be net negatives in Mamba Mentality - MM even while basking in the up-your-game glow of Jerell Hassell? Is Omar Jackson ready to prove he's more than a scorer after ditching that glow—and a two time Finals team?
Lots of new faces the league has this year!
BUT WHO IS TRAY BALLERS??????
I do see one familiar face and that was last years leading rebounder Matthew Maza. Standing tall at 6'7, athletic young man with a ton of potential to lead the team with a double double every game, but is that enough? We Shall see!
