BLOOMINGTON, IL – O.S. Springfield continues to etch its name into LSA history, capturing its first-ever Illinois Wesleyan Shootout Championship with a hard-fought 54-49 victory over a tenacious Athens squad.
After a grueling tournament filled with close battles and clutch performances, the Eagles proved their resilience in the championship game, overcoming a slow offensive start to execute when it mattered most. Led by LSA All-Time Leading Scorer Jace Easley and record-chasing Conor McCaffrey, O.S. Springfield showed why they are one of the most dangerous teams in the state heading into the season’s final stretch.
Coming off a record-breaking tournament run, Jace Easley once again took center stage, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals. The 8th grade captain played with the poise and confidence of a battle-tested leader, orchestrating the offense while making crucial defensive stops to keep Athens from gaining any serious momentum.
Easley’s dominance was on full display in the game’s closing minutes. With under two minutes to play, he attacked the basket, finishing through contact to put the Eagles ahead for good. On the defensive end, he stripped an Athens guard at midcourt and found McCaffrey in transition for a layup that pushed the lead to five. From there, O.S. controlled the clock and sealed the championship at the free-throw line.
"This team just plays with so much belief," Easley said after the win. "We don’t panic in big moments. We know what we’re capable of, and we’re proving it every single night."
Conor McCaffrey’s stat line showcased why he is one of the most versatile players in the LSA’s rich history. The senior guard finished the championship with 19 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals, providing the perfect balance of scoring and playmaking.
His most notable feat of the night, however, came from beyond the arc. McCaffrey knocked down four three-pointers, bringing his career total to 251, tying the LSA’s all-time record. With the Eagles returning home to face Our Savior’s Jacksonville on Wednesday, McCaffrey is now just one three-pointer away from standing alone in the record books.
"I’m not focused on the record," McCaffrey said. "We’re winning games, and that’s all that matters right now. The shots will fall when they need to."
Yet, for a player who has already solidified himself as one of the greatest backcourt playmakers in LSA history, breaking the three-point record is only a matter of time. Along with his outside shooting, McCaffrey is also just 67 assists away from setting the all-time LSA assist record, another milestone he is expected to reach before the season’s end.
The championship victory also marked a personal milestone for head coach Phillip Heppe, who recorded his 47th career win, improving his record to 47-17. The Eagles have now strung together seven straight victories, matching their longest win streak of the season.
"This group has battled through adversity all year," Heppe said. "We’ve had injuries, tough losses, and moments where things could’ve gone south, but they just keep finding ways to win. That’s what makes this team special."
The Eagles' growth throughout the tournament was evident in how they handled the physicality and defensive pressure of Athens. Though the game remained close throughout, O.S. never allowed their opponents to take full control, constantly responding to every Athens run with defensive stops and timely baskets.
Athens head coach Will Hardy had nothing but praise for the way O.S. Springfield carried itself throughout the tournament, recognizing the confidence and mentality that makes them such a tough opponent.
"That Our Savior’s team in that locker room has a moxie," Hardy said. "They have a swagger to them, and it voices itself not with their mouths, but with their play on the court. They don’t even have a thought that they are going to lose a ballgame right now."
With 21-5 (6-3) record, O.S. Springfield is gaining momentum at the perfect time. With a home game against Our Savior’s Jacksonville on Wednesday, all eyes will be on McCaffrey’s pursuit of history.
Beyond individual records, the Eagles now find themselves in prime position for a deep postseason run. If Easley and McCaffrey continue their dominant form and role players like Logan Allen and Jeremiah Perkins keep stepping up, O.S. Springfield has the potential to be one of the best teams in LSA history.
For now, though, the Eagles will celebrate a historic championship win, one that cements their status as one of the top teams in Illinois and officially puts the rest of the state on notice.
