Springfield, IL -- O.S. Springfield (7-0) found themselves in an unexpected battle Wednesday night, grinding out a 57-55 victory over Pleasant Plains (3-1) to secure the Our Savior's Thanksgiving Tournament Championship.

While the Eagles have dominated opponents with fast-paced offense and high-scoring outputs, this game was a defensive war, with Pleasant Plains forcing O.S. Springfield into a season-high 20 turnovers.

Despite the struggles, Jace Easley (26 points) and Conor McCaffrey (19 points, 10 assists) found a way to lead their team to victory, proving that Springfield can win even when they aren’t at their best.

Pleasant Plains executed their game plan to perfection, slowing down Springfield’s high-powered offense by applying full-court pressure and disciplined half-court defense.

“We have to execute better,” said O.S. head coach Phillip Heppe. “I was extremely frustrated with the turnovers today, obviously. They’re mental, and it’s something we need to get out of our minds.”

The Cardinals forced Springfield into 20 turnovers, while only committing 11 of their own.

Despite the sloppy execution, Springfield managed to stay in control with timely shot-making and clutch defensive stops in the closing minutes.

Pleasant Plains refused to back down, keeping pace with Springfield throughout the first half.

-- Springfield jumped out to a 26-17 lead with a 9-0 run, but Pleasant Plains responded with 10 straight points, taking a 27-26 lead on a deep three-pointer from Liam Hatfield.

-- Hatfield finished the half with 15 points, keeping the Cardinals within one point (29-28) at halftime.

-- McCaffrey continued to distribute at a high level, but Pleasant Plains’ defense prevented the Eagles from getting into their usual rhythm.

“They were physical and played us hard,” McCaffrey admitted. “We had to stay patient and trust our game plan.”

In the second half, Springfield leaned on Jace Easley, who willed his team to victory with tough buckets in crunch time.

The game remained tight until the final minutes, when Easley hit a clutch mid-range jumper to put O.S. Springfield up by four with under a minute to go.

Pleasant Plains had a chance to tie on the final possession, but Springfield’s defense held strong, forcing a contested three-pointer that missed as the buzzer sounded.

“Jace is our closer, and he showed why tonight,” Heppe said.

With the Thanksgiving Tournament title secured, Springfield now faces its biggest challenge of the season—a showdown against Immanuel Seymour (6-0), the defending Indiana State Champions.

Seymour enters Monday’s matchup riding a 23-game regular-season winning streak, and the game will be played at Champaign Central High School in Champaign, Illinois.

LSA basketball analyst Marcus Taylor weighed in on the upcoming showdown:
"This will be a real test for Springfield. They’ve been dominant, but Seymour is a battle-tested program that knows how to win. We’ll see if O.S. is truly among the elite."

With momentum on their side and a championship under their belt, O.S. Springfield is ready for the challenge.
