Metamora, IL – In an instant classic that will be remembered for years, O.S. Springfield made history, defeating #15-ranked Metamora 89-88 in triple overtime to win the Metamora Holiday Thanksgiving Tournament Championship.
The dynamic duo of Jace Easley and Conor McCaffrey put on a performance for the ages, playing all 45 minutes and combining for 75 of the Eagles' 89 points. Easley exploded for 39 points, while McCaffrey shot lights out, finishing with 36 points in a masterful display of scoring and leadership.
With the victory, O.S. Springfield became the first private school and LSA team to ever win the prestigious tournament, proving that LSA basketball can compete with the best in Illinois.
For four grueling quarters and three overtime periods, McCaffrey and Easley refused to back down. With each passing minute, the two captains found ways to answer every punch Metamora threw.
“They are so special, it’s amazing to watch them play,” O.S. Springfield head coach Phillip Heppe said after the game. “Conor and Jace rally the troops and take them to the top of the mountain with them.”
McCaffrey, the team’s floor general, orchestrated the offense brilliantly, picking apart Metamora’s defense while draining clutch shots from beyond the arc. Easley, meanwhile, delivered one of the gutsiest performances in tournament history, scoring at all three levels, playing elite defense, and making key plays down the stretch.
“It was a war,” Easley said. “But we’ve worked too hard to come up short. We weren’t leaving here without that trophy.”
The loss was heartbreaking for Metamora, which saw Ethan Kiser lead all scorers with 42 points. Despite the setback, Metamora head coach Warren Allen had high praise for the Eagles' performance.
“O.S. understands themselves,” Allen said. “They understand that McCaffrey and Easley are their horses. The rest of the team jumps on their backs and does what’s needed to win. It’s impressive to play and coach against.”
O.S. Springfield’s grueling path to the championship saw them play 16 quarters and five overtime periods over four games, including back-to-back double- and triple-overtime victories.
The numbers speak for themselves:
259 total points scored in the tournament (most in event history)
McCaffrey and Easley accounted for 193 of those points
The duo scored or assisted on 248 of the 259 total points
With the win, O.S. Springfield improves to 4-0, with three victories over top-25 ranked teams in the last four days.
While LSA teams are often overlooked on the state level, this tournament victory sent a message—O.S. Springfield is for real.
LSA analyst Marcus Taylor put it best:
"This wasn’t just a great performance—this was a historic one. The Eagles proved they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in Illinois. And with McCaffrey and Easley leading the way, they might just be getting started."
With a tournament championship under their belt, O.S. Springfield has officially arrived—and the rest of the state is taking notice.
