Metamora, IL -- In a game that will be remembered as one of the most grueling battles in O.S. Springfield history, the Eagles outlasted #19-ranked Quincy 85-83 in double overtime to advance to the Metamora Holiday Tournament Finals.
It was a career night for Conor McCaffrey, who poured in 34 points and dished out 13 assists, leading the Eagles with a mix of perimeter shooting, crafty finishes, and elite playmaking. Jace Easley once again proved why he is one of the most dynamic two-way guards in LSA history, adding 25 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks, including a game-sealing defensive play in the final seconds.
For 42 grueling minutes, McCaffrey and Easley shouldered the load for the Eagles, refusing to let fatigue dictate the outcome.
"It’s what they do—playing at that hard of a level for 42 minutes straight is remarkable," head coach Phillip Heppe said after the win. "They have trained their bodies to play at this physicality, they understand what has to be done to win."
McCaffrey set the tone early, scoring 18 first-half points while facilitating the offense with pinpoint passes. But Quincy refused to go away, using their inside presence and aggressive defense to keep the game close.
Easley came alive in the second half, hitting big-time shots in the fourth quarter and overtime, before making what was arguably the play of the game.
With the Eagles clinging to an 83-81 lead in the second overtime, Easley soared from the right wing, intercepted a Quincy pass, and sprinted the other way for a layup with 4.4 seconds left to seal the victory.
"I saw the pass coming, and I knew I had to take a chance," Easley said. "We weren’t going to let this game slip. This was about proving that we belong."
While McCaffrey and Easley were the headliners, other Eagles stepped up in key moments.
Jeremiah Perkins battled in the paint, securing several crucial rebounds and defensive stops down the stretch.
Lucas Schmitt provided valuable minutes off the bench, knocking down a pair of key three-pointers to shift momentum in the second half.
Noah Oldham’s hustle plays kept possessions alive, helping the Eagles extend multiple offensive sets.
Quincy, led by their own standout guard play and relentless post scoring, nearly stole the game in regulation. With under 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, they knocked down a contested three-pointer to tie the game at 68-68, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, McCaffrey drilled a clutch step-back three to give the Eagles a 78-76 lead with less than a minute remaining, but Quincy answered with a driving layup to force double overtime.
"We knew it was going to take everything we had," McCaffrey said. "This is what high-level basketball looks like—every possession matters."
With back-to-back wins over ranked opponents in three days, the Eagles are now on the radar of Illinois basketball analysts.
Marcus Taylor, LSA Basketball Analyst, praised O.S. Springfield’s resilience:
"This team plays with a chip on their shoulder. They don’t back down. You can see the chemistry between McCaffrey and Easley—they complement each other perfectly. And when you have a point guard who can control the pace like Conor, you’re never out of a game."
But the job isn’t done yet.
Awaiting O.S. Springfield in the Metamora Holiday Tournament Finals is host team Metamora (4-0), ranked #15 in the state.
The matchup is a rematch of last year’s non-conference thriller, where Metamora escaped with a 79-83 victory behind Ethan Kiser’s 35-point outburst. Easley had 27 in that game, but the Eagles fell just short.
"We owe them one," Easley said with a smirk. "We remember last year. Now we get our chance."
With a chance to become the first LSA team to win the Metamora Holiday Tournament, the Eagles enter the finals battle-tested and hungry.
"We’ve fought too hard to stop now," McCaffrey said. "We’re going to leave it all on the floor."
The stage is set. O.S. Springfield vs. Metamora for the championship.
Will the Eagles complete their historic run? Tip-off is tonight.
