The award show for the first ever PEI Vintage Basketball was held on Sunday Night, with Ernie, Chuck, Kenny and Shaq of TNT hosting and Tim Keizer handling the security detail.
The awards broke down as follows:
John Alex Vos won league MVP, leading the league in scoring at 14 points per game, to go with 10 rebounds and 3 assists per contest. Other players receiving votes were Yahya Sefau, Yousef Sefau and a rogue vote for "Chino".
Defensive Player of the Year went to Olexander Sokolenko, who lead the league in blocks with 2.1 a game along with 1.3 steals per game. Sokolenko received 7 of a possible 24 votes. Yousef, Ian Kerr and Vos all received 3 votes, while Thomas Harper got 2 votes. Chino also got a pity vote.
The "Mr. Bucket" award, which is described as "Guy who walks into the gym and scores 15 a game", went to Jesse Fleming. "Flemwad" averaged 12.5 points per game and lead the league in 3 pointers, with 23 over his 8 games played. "The Angry Inch" won this award in a landslide, getting 12 out of 24 votes. Yahya and Matt Connolly got 3 votes each. Somehow Chino got a vote for this one too. Must have been Claudia voting.
4th Line Grinder, pretty self-explanatory, was one of the hotly-contested awards of the night. In the end, fans were shocked as Shaquille O'Neal mumbled through his presentation: it was a tie. Alex "Chino" Frangos and Jake "Carrot Cake" MacCallum both received 6 votes. These two young men are both better known by their nicknames and are two of the hardest workers in the league. They, as grade 12 Political Science teacher Ennis Alisic would say "Get the dirty sh!t done". Thomas Harper had 4 votes, while Tyler Johnston got 3.
The Human Highlight Reel went to another fan-favourite: Kelly Barnett. The human version of a roller coaster, Barnett only averaged 3 points a game, but oh my were they fun to watch. He recieved 8 out of 24 votes. Runner up was Barnett's comedy partner and big spoon: Matt Connolly, who got 4 votes. Chino got a vote for this too.
Sixth Man of the Year was awarded to Jordan Khan, who averaged 6 points and 3 rebounds for League Champion Team JA, and always scored in the smoothest way possible. Khan got 5 votes. Meanwhile, Chino somehow finished second with 4 votes, which means people were either drunk or paid off by Frangos. Chino averaged just one point a game. Johnston and Harper fell short in this award as well, finished with 3 votes each.
League All-Stars were awarded to Vos, Yahya, Yousef, Connolly and Thompson. These players made up five of the top six in scoring, with all of them averaing at least 12 points a game. Yousef, Vos and Yahya were the top three in assists per game as well. Other players receiving votes were Joe Thomson (leading rebounder right out of quarantine), Max Ramsay (10 & 7 while shaking off pounds of rust), Josh Bourque (also the league's sweetheart) and of course, Chino.
All Defensive team was only three players: Olex Sokolenko, Vos and Ian Kerr. Olex and Vos were the leaders in blocks, while Kerr averaged 1.6 steals and 1 block a game in a very well-rounded campaign. Yousef fell one vote short, while Harper, Thomson and Ramsay were finalists as well.
Finally, Playoff MVP to no one's surprise went to Jesse Fleming. Fleming averaged 26 points per game in the playoffs and made an incredible 13 threes over the two games. Again, another landslide for "Flemdog Millionaire" getting 18 out of 24 votes. One might say he could win a landslide for league's darkest humour, as well.
That concludes the awards for this season. Thanks for coming out fellas. Can't wait to see everyone again! Excited to see how season 2 shakes out, who knows what could happen...
