4th-6th GRADE (JUNIOR) REC BASKETBALL LEAGUE:
Overview for Youth Rec Basketball League:
The junior recreation basketball league extends the fundamentals and game of basketball for boys in 4th, 5th and 6th grades. Teams will have parent volunteers as coaches and will have one (1) practice session per week. Coaches will work on skill development, game play and game strategy each week during practice. All regular season games are on Saturdays.
Playoffs will determine the league champion – All teams will participate in the playoffs. Byes and matchups are determined by, the number of teams in the league for that season, and by each team’s record.
Rules for Junior Rec Basketball League:
The game format, rules, and substitution system provide the best sports experience for every child. Except where the rules unique to CV Youth basketball apply, play is governed by the National Federation of State High School Association's Rules Book (website:www.nfhs.org).
Game Format for Junior Rec Basketball League:
• Games consist of four 10‐minute quarters and a brief halftime.
• The game clock runs continuously stopping only at the middle of each quarter for player substitutions. This allows coaches to line up and match substitutions based on height and ability without using valuable game time. Teams are not permitted to use this time for coaching (as a timeout)
• All coaches will follow an equal player substitution system. Players should not sit out back to back substitution periods unless the team roster is greater than 10 players
• Each team has one (1) timeout per half. Unused timeouts do not carry over into the 2nd half
• Every game begins with a jump ball. Possession at subsequent jump‐ball situations will be determined by the possession arrow
• At the end of each quarter the possession arrow will determine possession for the next quarter
• Teams switch goals at halftime.
Rules for Play:
• Man‐to‐man defense only (no zone)
• Double‐teaming is not permitted
• Defensive players may not guard their opponents in the backcourt at any time (no full court press)
• The offense must purposefully attack the defense in every situation (no stalling). Violations will result in a turnover.
• Foul shots will be used for all shooting fouls – Individual and team fouls are not tracked and therefore all non-shooting fouls will result in the ball being taken out on the side by the offended team – The clock will continue to run during foul shots
