SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- - Connor Brown scored 29 points, Chubbs Larson added 10 and Calvary upset Our Savior's who lost Conor McCaffrey to Concussion Protocol in the 1st quarter.

The game was fast-paced and close throughout. Connor Brown hit a 3-pointer with 4:08 left to give the Saints a 52-51 lead, which Calvary didn't relinquish.

"They're a great basketball team, a team I think could make a really deep run," Calvary head coach Neil Ferris said of Our Savior's. "In LSA ... I've never seen anything like it. It's absolutely relentless."

Jace Easley scored 33 points for Our Savior's (9-4, 5-2 CIL) and Conor McCaffrey scored 6 points and 4 assists, before taking a shot to the face and falling to the floor. In an attempt to get back to feet, McCaffrey shook around and couldn't keep his balance, forcing coach Phillip Heppe to make the tough call to pull McCaffrey.

Jeremiah Perkins added in 10 and 11 rebounds. Easley missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game.

"I thought it was going in," Easley said. "Honestly, it felt good, but it hit the back of the rim."

Chubs Larson's 10 points were very impactful for the Saints (7-6, 2-5). The Saints limped in on a three-game IESA losing streak, including two double-digit home losses.

"Obviously, I'm really pleased with my team," Ferris said. "We really battled tonight, it helps to have everybody back and healthy.

But Ferris made sure to mention more of McCaffrey's injury.

"I'm grateful for any win that we are to get, but winning this game with him (Conor) playing is a tough pill to swallow, he's just a dynamic player, I really hope the best for him and that he's able to get back on the court soon."

QUICK START

Our Savior's jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, fueled by 5 quick points from Easley and dynamic points scored by McCaffrey, who went out with the concussion in a 15-7 game. After McCaffrey's exit, Calvary tied up the game at 16-16 midway through the first half.

Our Savior's gaurd Lucas Schmidt took a blow to his left shoulder late in the first half and left in obvious pain. He returned in the second half but was held scoreless.

Jeremiah Perkins had 8 points at the break.

Brown buried a 3 at the buzzer to pull the Saints within 28-26 at the half.

"It was frustrating," Our Savior's head coach Phillip Heppe said. "We didn't get the ball to Jeremiah enough in the second half. I have to give Calvary all the credit. They were physically tough, they smacked us and hit us."

NOT SHARP

Heppe was cleary upset at his team's less than steller shooting, Our Savior's shot 41% from the field, but take away McCaffrey's baskets and Our Savior's shot 36% after the 1st quarter.

"We were sloppy and not sharp," Heppe said. "I'll take the blame on this one. We were just as bad in practice the last two days as we were in the game."

BOUNCING BACK

Coming off a 79-57 loss to Bethel Morton, Ferris was thrilled at his team's effort on the road against another highly ranked LSA team.

"We had a really tough film session after the Bethel game. The players responded," Ferris said. "They believed they were going to win. We changed a lot of things in our philosophy, and I think it helped us. We had a lot of guys who were unbelievably courageous tonight, played with great guts, had to play a lot of minutes."

Brown attributed the win to confidence. "It was big for sure. You know how hard it is to get wins in these type of games, mainly on the road. We locked in, did what we had to do, got it done. We believed. Believing is the hardest thing."

"Even though we lost to Bethel the other day, we try to focus on the next game, get better."

MCCAFFREY'S CONCUSSION

Big news is forming on the McCaffrey front, if he indeeds tests for a concussion, McCaffrey would miss at least a week, but if he comes back clean, expect McCaffrey to be back Monday vs Mount Pulaski on the road.
