Disclaimer: These are not the actual standings, just simply opinionated power rankings.
1. Warriors – Golden State is back, and from the looks of it, even better than they were a year ago. Not only did the entire starting five from the 2017 championship team return, but the Warriors also added the Con(n)or Brothers. Conor McCool has proven to be one of the best playmakers in the league, and Conor O’Rourke has provided a much-needed defensive presence, tallying 4 steals and 3 blocks in the opener. The presence of the Con(n)nors on the court also takes some pressure off of Rob Wonyetye, a player that GM Brandon Colon credits for being essential to the 2017 Finals victory. Rob W. is excited to now be able to put more of his mental focus on trash talking. One day following the draft, the extroverted 3-point specialist began his trash talking efforts by making the entire league aware the Warriors considered 2018 a wrap and were already thinking about their third championship in 2019. Contrary to last year, it’s been Allen Brown who’s taken on the largest portion of the scoring load this year. The two highest scoring games of his career have been these two opening games in 2018. Brown is currently leading the league in scoring with 27.5 per game. Brown was almost not even on the Warriors roster, if it wasn’t for the front office giving up a great deal of “non-cash considerations” to get him. Although the defending champions taken to the wire by the Josh-less Thunder, the defending champions have shown they can win in crunch time if they need to and there is no reason to put any team ahead of them at this point in the season.
2. Nuggets – The surprise team of 2018 has been the expansion franchise out of Denver with a roster consisting primarily of rookies. Started by 2017 Sixth Man of the Year John Mollica, this team has proven they can compete with the long-standing franchises of the league. After a rainout and wasted gas money, the Nuggets finally got to begin their season against Mollica’s former team, the Philadelphia 76ers. Behind an impressive rookie debut by big man Brandon Kemmerer (19 pts, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, & 2 blocks), who many are nicknaming “The Mountain”, the Nuggets shocked viewers around Palm Beach Gardens with a statement win against the renowned three-time champions. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the Nuggets would go on the next week to demolish the Rockets, opening up with a 10-0 lead and never trailing the entire game. Mollica would follow up the opening victory against Philly by making a controversial post on Facebook in which he implied the Nuggets had replaced the 76ers as one of the top two elite teams in the league, alongside the Warriors. These power rankings agree with Mollica.
3. 76ers - Other than the core of Casey, Adil, & J-Gannon, Philly has a different look in 2018 than in years prior. For the first time in Big Guys League history, the McClure brothers will wear the same uniform. With the commissioner still in search of his first title and Casey coming up short in the Finals against an expansion franchise for the second year in a row, the siblings felt their incentives were aligned and the time was right. With Mike also came his two long-time friends, Johnny “J-Triple” Hicks and hustle big man Sean Hayden. Arguably the biggest offseason acquisition though was that of former champion Dee McGrady. J-Gannon’s cousin E-Rock out of FSU will prove to provide a powerful presence down low. With all these new pieces, however, we still have yet to see this team really click. If this roster starts to gel and enhance the team chemistry, the 76ers have a high ceiling.
4. Heat – Jared has retaken his position as GM of the Heat for the first time since taking Miami to the first ever BGBL Finals back in 2013. Although this team has struggled with commitment issues early, Mesches has been able to put together a pretty talented and competitive roster that has potential to play well together. This was evident in the team’s 19-point beatdown of the Oklahoma City Thunder, in which 15 of the club’s 25 made field goals were assisted. After a 2017 sophomore slump, point guard Trevor Gilson has proven to be an early MVP candidate, averaging over 20 points per game and really controlling the offense. Whether this team heads north or south in the standings could solely be dependent on the players’ commitment.
5. Celtics - We have yet to really see this new-look Celtics team in action. Due to rainouts, they have only played their opener against the defending champion Warriors. Boston looked competitive throughout though, until late in the second half when Golden State kind of pulled away to a 17-point victory. After spending a season being led by the 2017 Offensive Player of the Year Chris Starling, GM Julian Quintero went out and recruited another Starling, adding quite literally an “X-Factor” to the mix. We will have to wait and see this team compete against some different competition to really get a good representation of what this team can accomplish this year.
6. Rockets – Houston’s season has been plagued by rainouts and suspensions early on. In what people are now calling “The Brawl Before the Storm,” a scuffle between Rockets & Thunder players escalated quickly, resulting in arguably the most infamous incident in BGBL history. As a result, the Rockets lost Quandary Hughes for the season and Bam Adeyemi for 2 games, their second and third round picks, respectively. However, the Rockets were able to pick up free agent Al Starling, who has potential to be a very nice addition to the team going forward. GM Nick Chiocca will look to lead this team in the opposite direction it’s heading right now after a blowout loss to the up-and-coming Denver Nuggets.
7. Thunder – A 3-game suspension to Josh Robles, a guy who was brought to Oklahoma City with the intention of being the heart and soul of the team, was a big hit to the organization. This team was still able to compete with the Warriors though. The Thunder have a lot of potential but this next game against Boston should probably be considered a must-win for them if they want an opportunity to do any damage this season.
