Game Recap: 5/28/2025
In today's short, sharp, and defense-heavy battle between the New York Bricks and the Los Angeles Fakers, the Jake-inspired Bricks edged out the Nolan-led Fakers at a final score of 9 to 8. The low socre is attributed to the low game length, which due to inadequate scheduling, maxed out at around 4 and a half minutes. This marks the shortest game in ABL history. But that didn't stop these teams from playing intensely. Both teams knoched 4 field goal makes, despite 0 free throw's. Both teams had similar 2-point makes, with the difference being one 3-pointer from the Bricks, the only one of the game. Rebounding, on the other hand, was surprisingly lopsided in the Fakers favor. Despite the fact that our league's best rebounder, Darcy, was not present for the Fakers, the Fakers out-rebounded the Bricks 12 to 7. Assists, turnovers, and steals were all even, but the Bricks had 3 blocks to the Fakers 0. This defense, along with some shifty offense, helped the Bricks out-block and out-shoot the Fakers to take home the win and boost their season record up to 3-1.
The Bricks used more than just one or two players to lead this game. Despite the Bricks only having 4 players available on the floor (meaning no switch-off), the Bricks made heavy use of all of their players to win this game. Jake, who led the way in scoring for the Bricks, only needed 4 points to do it. At a clean 2-for-3 from the floor, Jake's 2 rebounds also improved his stat line. Jake, however, never made a single pass for the entire duration of the game, and he only caught 3 passes made to him. This meant that Jake had 0 assists to go along with that, and he also never made a steal, block, or screen. This low ball movement performance suggests Jake may need to move around the floor a little bit, or play in the passing game a little more. Orlando also played for the Bricks, marking his first game back since his injury. With 3 points on 1-for-4 shooting, Orlando's shot was a little rusty, but he made up for it with a blocking record. Orlando recorded a record-breaking 3 blocks in just 4 and a half minutes of play. That's an average of 7 blocks per 10 minutes. This puts his season blocks total at 13, a league best. He also pitched in 2 rebounds and a steal. Cade, another Brick contributor, also shot 1-for-4, but pitched in an assist, 2 rebounds, and a forced turnover to aid his average shooting numbers. Garrett also pitched in a a rebound and an assist.
The Fakers performance was a little bit different. No player made more than 1 field goal. Nolan, the biggest story for the Fakers, shot a regretful 1-for-5 from the floor. But very unlike Jake, Nolan shined with ball movement and on the posession side of things. All 12 of Nolan's passes were successful, and Nolan caught all 13 of the passes to him. On top of that, Nolan added 2 assists. Unfortunately, he was unable to add any steals or forced turnovers to top if off. He also never snagged a rebound. After Nolan, Chet kept the Fakers rolling. Although he shot an unusually average 1-for-4 from the floor, he grabbed a game-high 4 rebounds. No steals, assists, blocks, fouls drawn, turnovers, or turnovers forced for Chet this time though. He had a light game overall. But Rocky, a teamate of Chet and Nolan's, probably wished he had stuck to a light game. His 1-for-5 on shooting didn't help his repertoire, and getting blocked twice only made it worse. Apart from that, Rocky made a steal and grabbed three rebounds, but the damage had been done, and he also committed a turnover. Zach also was present. Most thought he would pitch in, especially coming off of his 10 point performance last game, but Zach never fired a single shot. Zach's game consisted of 1 turnover, 3 rebounds, and he also had 100% passing and pass reception. Max subbed in for a game-low 55 seconds, and made 1 block and missed a 3-pointer.
In a game that everyone thought the Fakers would shine, the Bricks scrappy defense helped them overcome all the Fakers had to offer. Judging by the Bricks record, you wouldn't know that they have a -4.9 +/- on the season. Our next game on May 30th will show us if the Fakers can restore order. Will the Fakers reignite their once stifling offense?
