Playoffs Round One Recaps

Sherwood Lumber 54, Hugh Pollack 45
Sherwood Lumber's timely shooting helped them cut down Hugh Pollack, 54-45, in their first round matchup at Chelsea Piers on Sunday evening.

Pollack, who was missing most of their team and were joined by subs Phil "Jelly Legs" Bausk, Josh "Rolling Suitcase" Rappaport and Aaron Blady who helped keep the game within six-to-10 points for much of the night. Sherwood started the game on an 10-1 run in the wire-to-wire win to help them move on to the RBA semifinals.

"I thought it was pretty cool that Bausk and Rap played," exclaimed Sherwood's Max Geller, who led all scorers with 21 points. "I was worried either of them was going to collapse on the court, but Bausk assured me he wouldn't play hard enough for that to happen."

Bausk led the short-handed Hugh Pollack with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Adam Hoch nailed three, three-pointers and finished with nine points of his own.

Sherwood's Jake Fischer tallied 13 points with Michael Paris adding 10 for the red squad. Fischer is hoping that if his team wins the RBA title that when he tweets out a photo of the celebration, it will make Woj and Shams immensely jealous as they will have one fewer RBA title than the burgeoning basketball journalist.

Pollectibles 44, Brandgenuity 42
Down by two with 1.1 seconds remaining, Brandgenuity captain Willie Stern drew up an out-of-bounds play designed to get the ball to his best scorer on floor, Ethan Coy. Stern passed the ball to Coy who received it at the right wing. Coy rose to shoot a potential game-winning and season-saving three-pointer, but Yoshi Gadasi mustered all of his Mario and Yoshi mushroom power and blocked the shot, sealing the win for the Pollectibles.

The Pollectibles led for most of the game, but rarely had their lead exceed five or six points. They were led by Sam Marlowe, who stuffed the stat sheet, scoring 15 points and tallying nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Brandgenuity was led by Coy who scored 13 points, and rookie Matan Mann, who scored 12 points and collected nine rebounds and two blocks.

Brandgenuity had chances to tie or take the lead before the final play.

“Nate [Schoeffler] shot a three with like 10 seconds left and I saw my life flash before my eyes,” said Pollectibles guard Elan Kane. “It’s bounced off the rim and I think I threw up a little.”

With the win, the Pollectibles move on to the Semifinals to face the Elite Pets. Brandgenuity, meanwhile, has been eliminated from contention.

GlaseNGlitter 50, Bogrim 98 37
In a game that was closer than the final score suggests, the top seeded Glase N’ squad was able to squeeze by Bogrim 98 and move on to the 2nd round in the RBA Playoffs.

The first half was a back and forth battle with plenty of missed shots as both teams combined to shoot 16% from 3 on the evening. Glase N’ was able to get Bogrim 98 into foul trouble early with relentless attacking of the rim, causing ‘98 to sub out some key players and also resulting in some extra free throws for the Glitter Guys. Throughout the game the Glaze N’ team took a total of 28 free throws, likely a season high for the team (didn’t confirm).

Although they had some scoring at times, Bogrim ‘98 attacked the basket and the offensive boards throughout the contest, and had many second chance opportunities. On offense Captain Ben Danitz led the way for his squad with 13 points and somehow registered 0 shot attempts in the box score.

For GlaseN’Glitter, their second half rally was punctuated by a big rhythm 3 from Ari Sarna to push the lead to 3 scores. Additionally Elichai Foger and Matan Berkowitz each had big blocked shots down the stretch to help fend off an attempted late-comeback from Bogrim.

GlaseN’ will move on to face a streaking Sherwood Lumber team in the final, winners of their last 2 games in a row.

Elite Pets 41, loanDepot 36
Elite Pets is moving onto the Semifinals after a balanced scoring attack propelled the team to victory over the No. 2 seeded loanDepot squad.

Despite missing standout rookie Jonathan Granowitz, Depot kept the game close throughout, thanks to 19 points from Jason Scheff, 10 points from Jake Rimberg and a whopping 24 (!) rebounds from Evan Ashley. It was Ashley’s second game with at least 24 rebounds this season, which is an insane sentence for this reporter to write.

“I watched that movie ‘Rebound’ with Martin Lawrence before the game for some inspiration,” Ashley said.

But unfortunately for Depot, Pets, despite missing Daniel Stecker played a well-balanced game, with seven players scoring at least two points, including 12 from Ben Schluger. The pets pulled away late with some timely shots from Ian Cutler (7 points, 5 rebounds) and Tomer Langer (6 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal).

The Pets take on the Pollectibles next week in the Semifinals while Depot is eliminated.
